on the shelf
1/29/26
The new season of Bridgerton is out and in the first episode, one of the characters happily announced she was, “on the shelf.”
In the context of the show, and specifically to this certain character, it means: “A self-determined spinster. One that is opting out of the ‘marriage mart’ to pursue her own freedom and intellectual interests rather than finding a husband…while traditionally a derogatory term for a woman deemed too old, the show uses it to highlight the intense pressure on young women to marry and the, sometimes empowering, choice to reject those social standards.”
This show is set in the 1800s. However, social standards still exist. Have you ever come head to head with a social standard with which you did not agree?
What I know is that social standards and norms only exist because we give them power. And we give them power by agreeing to them.
What are you going along with that you no longer agree with?
This is YOUR life.
It is OKAY to declare yourself: On the Shelf. About ANYTHING. About ANY instance or situation that you no longer wish to abide.
Also. This is your Life. Whatever it is for YOU, it is not up for debate. You don’t need to take this to a committee vote. You don’t need to seek anyone else’s permission.
This is about trusting yourself. Your inner knowing. Your inner compass.
YOU get to decide for YOU.
